What does 今 mean in Japanese?
今 means now, and it is the base of almost every ‘this current…’ time word an N4 learner needs.
The kun’yomi いま (ima) is the everyday word for ‘now’ (今、何時ですか), while the on’yomi コン builds the 今〜 family: 今日 (きょう, today), 今週 (こんしゅう, this week), 今月 (こんげつ, this month), and 今年 (ことし, this year).

How to Understand This Kanji
いま is spoken constantly in daily conversation and can mean ‘right now’ or ‘just a moment ago’ depending on context (今、来ました = I just arrived). The 今〜 compounds are neutral and used everywhere, but watch the irregular readings: 今日 is きょう (not こんにち in normal speech) and 今年 is ことし, not こんねん.

When Learners Usually See This Kanji
The three readings to memorize are いま, きょう (今日), and ことし (今年); these three do not follow the plain コン pattern. Regular コン compounds (今週 こんしゅう, 今月 こんげつ, 今回 こんかい) are predictable once you know 週, 月, and 回. Do not confuse 今 with the look-alike 令 or 令 in 令和; 今 has the simple ‘lid’ top over a short stroke.
