午 – Kanji Meaning, Reading, and Common Words

What does 午 mean in Japanese?

午 means noon, and for a learner it lives almost entirely inside two words: 午前 and 午後.

Read ゴ, it splits the day at midday: 午前 (ごぜん) is the morning / a.m. side and 午後 (ごご) is the afternoon / p.m. side, with 正午 (しょうご) marking noon itself.

How to Understand This Kanji

午 is almost always read ゴ and almost always appears in time-of-day words, so learners meet it as a building block rather than a standalone word. 午前 and 午後 are neutral and used constantly when stating clock times (午後三時 = 3 p.m.), and 正午 names noon itself. Everyday use of 午 is essentially limited to these few words.

Common Words

  • 午前(ごぜん / gozen) — morning, a.m.
  • 午後(ごご / gogo) — afternoon, p.m.
  • 正午(しょうご / shougo) — noon, midday
  • 午前中(ごぜんちゅう / gozenchuu) — during the morning

Example Sentences

  • 午前九時に会議があります。

ごぜんくじにかいぎがあります。 / Gozen kuji ni kaigi ga arimasu.

    There is a meeting at 9 a.m.

  • 午後は買い物に行きます。

ごごはかいものにいきます。 / Gogo wa kaimono ni ikimasu.

I will go shopping in the afternoon.

  • 正午に昼ご飯を食べます。

    しょうごにひるごはんをたべます。 / Shougo ni hirugohan o tabemasu.

    I eat lunch at noon.

When Learners Usually See This Kanji

午 is rarely used on its own; in practice it lives inside 午前 (a.m.), 午後 (p.m.), and 正午 (noon). 午前 and 午後 divide the day at 正午: 午前 is the stretch before noon and 午後 is the stretch after it. Be careful with 午前12時 and 午後12時, which are ambiguous in everyday use; say 正午 for midday and 午前0時 for midnight to be clear. When telling time, 午前 / 午後 come before the hour (午前九時, 午後六時). Also do not write 午 as 牛 (cow): 牛 has an extra top stroke crossing the vertical line, while 午 does not.

Summary

午 means noon and anchors the a.m./p.m. words 午前 and 午後.
